SEIS.Online – Seismic results over the last 12 months

The SEIS.Online web map application makes it possible to call up interactive information on seismic events in Germany and neighbouring regions. The map shows the locations of the seismic events which occurred in the last 12 months. The data for the epicentre identification is provided by the seismometer stations in the German Regional Seismic Network (GRSN) as well as the GERES array and Gräfenberg array (GRF). As soon as an event has been evaluated, this is shown on the map assuming that the local magnitude (ML) is 2.5 or higher. Earthquakes and induced events (caused by mining or explosives) initially remain undifferentiated. This classification is only carried out when the data catalogue for the relevant year is prepared.

Caution: The epicentre identification is initially carried out automatically. This can produce erroneous results in some cases; usually producing an incorrect epicentre or an exaggerated magnitude. This is the reason why the results of the automatic evaluation are checked by manual routine assessment and corrected when necessary. The manual evaluation usually takes place the following day (working days).

The source parameters of the manual re-assessment are summarised in a table.

The SEIS.Online web map application

Start the application and zoom in (e.g. with the “magnifying-glass tool”) to go to a selected event. Now change to the “manual tool” and click on the middle of the relevant event with the mouse to access more detailed information on this event. The SEIS.Online function overview helps you use the web map application, and provides an overview of the available tools.
